The Edinburgh Mela is Scotland’s biggest and best celebration of world music and dance, and one of Europe’s largest and most important multicultural events. The Festival has grown in popularity and importance every year since it began in 1995.
Traditionally it is placed as the final hurrah of the Edinburgh Festivals every August, and this year was no exception. As the programme kicked off, over 500 performers were set to take part in 75 shows over the weekend including Dance Namaste dance group, music act Delhi 2 Dublin, Edinburgh’s own political hip hop group Northern Xposure, and the Edinburgh Bhanga Crew.
This year, for the second year running, Bar 4 Hire were contracted to run the bars at the Edinburgh Mela. We provided a full service of staff, stock, and bar and had a fantastic time meeting and serving Festival-goers.
The word “mela” means “gathering” and it certainly lived up to its name. Saturday was a fantastic day, seeing record admissions to the Mela festival. As locals and tourists alike flocked to Leith for the festival, we were kept on our toes! The bar was busy throughout the day, selling West Brewery’s St Mungo lager, Briska cider, Pimms, wine, spirits, and soft drinks.
All of Bar 4 Hire’s offerings were complemented by fantastic food from middle-eastern and Asian to the classic burger van. The colourful music, dance, and fashion totally lit up the streets and a fantastic time was had by all.
After a good start to the day on Sunday, unfortunately high winds mean that the event was called off early. Despite the unfortunate turn in the weather, Bar 4 Hire had a fantastic weekend serving the Festival and the weekend rounded off with a fantastic fireworks display.
Did you attend the Edinburgh Mela or any other Edinburgh Festivals? We hope to see you all again next year!
